A short explanation of museum- farm "De Vriendschap" (The Friendship).
About grandmother's and great- grandmother's time in West-Friesland.
From about 1600 till 1950 in this part of North-Holland a very characteristic type of farms was built, the so called "stolp" farms. The builders of these farms started by putting up 4 or 6 long wooden poles which had to bear the thatched roof. After that the walls were built. These farms were meant to provide a living for the farmer and his family, for the cattle, during the winterperiode, for the hay-stock and for the agricultural-machines.

Our farm, our stolp, was built in 1889. It has a length of 25 metres and a breadth of 16 metres. The farm has a so called double square, this means: it has been built with 6 poles in stead of 4 poles, which bear the roof.

In one of the poles before the room, ”Jansie” was a small round cavity in which the architectural design of the farm was kept, unfortunately the latter has been lost. The stone in the front was placed in 1889 by the family Kramer-Glijnis. We bought the stolp in 1988. At that moment everything was in original state. You can see this in the photoos hanging in the farm, e.g. near the winding stairs. After seven years of rebuilding the museum and boarding-house were formally opened by Mrs. F.G. van Diepen-Oost, member of the College of Deputies.

On the 27th of May 1999 “ the Stolp” was certificated with the sign Top-Norm. This is an indication of quality, with which we are very glad. The word stolp or stolp-farm, means everything under one roof. The farmer, his wife and their family lived in the front part of the building.

The hay was piled up between the six high poles in the centre of the farm. It was piled up as high as the ridge of the farm. Between those poles now the livingroom is situated. Left of this hay-rick formerly the cow-house was situated, now here is the dining-room. In the backpart of the house was the living of the labourers. Here they had their own kitchen and cupboard bed, nowadays you will find here the reception. The threshfloor was used for storing up the machines e.g. the tractor, the plough, and the hay-cart. Your room has not got a number, all rooms are named after the cow-names of old times.
